What are
the important
things I need to know
about dental health? |
Dr Zaf Khouri BDS,
Grad Dip Forensic Odont
Dr
Khouri was born in Beirut, Lebanon.
He moved to New Zealand as a young child, when his family
immigrated here in 1961, and attended primary and intermediate school in
Palmerston North and Hamilton. After
beginning his secondary school education at Hamilton Boys’ High, he
continued his high school education in the USA and graduated from
Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland.
He then spent some months living in Kenya before returning to New
Zealand to complete his NZ high school education as a border at Hamilton
Boys’ High and then moved on to Otago University.
He graduated with a BDS from the University
of Otago in 1979 and has practised in Hamilton, Wellington and
Morrinsville before taking over this practice in Hamilton in 1986.
In 1990, Dr Khouri
traveled to Melbourne to undertake further study and in 1991 received
the Graduate Diploma in Forensic Odontology from the University of
Melbourne. He is one of
only four qualified forensic odontologists practising in New Zealand,
and was the first ever to register his qualification here.
Dr Khouri is widely
experienced and is highly regarded by his colleagues for his clinical
ability. Dr Khouri is the
chairman of the New Zealand Dental Association Regional Peer Review
Committee for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty area.
He sits on the national advisory committee to the New Zealand
Police on Forensic Odontology. Dr
Khouri is a member of the New
Zealand Dental Association (and is a past treasurer and past
secretary of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Branch).
He is a member of the NZ Endodontic Society, the NZ Prosthodontic
Society, the NZ Society for Anaesthesia and Sedation in Dentistry, the
Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society and the American
Society of Forensic Odontology. Dr
Khouri is also a founding member of the New Zealand Society of Forensic
Dentistry and is currently President of that Society.
Dr Khouri was awarded the
New Zealand
Special Service Medal for his work in Phuket after the Boxing Day
Tsunami of 2004.
Dr Khouri is a meticulous
clinician who always does the very best he can for each and every
patient. He has a gentle
approach – a ‘soft touch’, but is uncompromisingly exact in his
clinical work. His areas of
professional interest include restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry,
crown and bridge dentistry and oral surgery.
He is certified to provide intravenous conscious sedation, and
because of this, he is well supported by a number of his colleagues in
and around Hamilton who refer him many patients requiring minor oral
surgical procedures (like removing impacted wisdom teeth).
This is a very useful service for patients requiring this sort of
treatment who cannot afford specialist fees due to limited or no health
insurance cover.
Dr
Khouri is happily married to Cathy, a well known and highly respected clinical
dietitian who works in her own private practice in Hamilton.
Together, they have three adult daughters, to whom they are
devoted. |
