Tooth Whitening Guide

Is tooth whitening right for me?

Professional tooth whitening is suitable for many patients, but it isn't appropriate for everyone.

Before whitening treatment begins, we'll assess the health of your teeth and gums and discuss any factors that may influence your results.

Whitening treatment may not be recommended if:

  • You have untreated tooth decay or gum disease.

  • You have significant tooth sensitivity.

  • You are pregnant.

  • You have leaking or failing restorations that require treatment first.

Will whitening work on fillings or crowns?

No.

Tooth whitening only changes the colour of natural tooth structure. Existing fillings, crowns and veneers will not whiten and may need to be replaced if they no longer match the colour of your natural teeth after treatment.

We'll discuss this with you during your consultation if it's relevant to your treatment plan.

What is the Pola White take-home whitening system?

Pola White is a professionally prescribed take-home whitening system that uses custom-made whitening trays designed specifically for your teeth.

The process involves:

  • Taking impressions or scans of your teeth.

  • Fabricating custom whitening trays.

  • Wearing the trays for approximately 90-120 minutes each day.

  • Continuing treatment over one to two weeks until the desired shade is achieved.

Because the trays are custom made, they are comfortable, discreet and designed to distribute the whitening gel evenly.

How long will my results last?

Tooth whitening is not permanent.

Over time, teeth naturally pick up staining from food and drinks such as:

  • Coffee

  • Tea

  • Red wine

  • Dark-coloured berries

  • Smoking and vaping

Many patients choose to use touch-up whitening kits periodically to maintain their results.

Can a root-filled tooth be whitened?

Yes.

Teeth that have previously undergone root canal treatment can sometimes become darker than neighbouring teeth. In many cases, these teeth can be successfully treated using an internal whitening technique.

This treatment involves placing a whitening agent inside the tooth following root canal treatment and replacing it over a period of time until the desired shade is achieved.

Your dentist will discuss whether this treatment is suitable for your particular situation.

Is professional whitening safer than over-the-counter products?

Professional tooth whitening allows your dentist to assess your oral health before treatment and recommend the most appropriate option for you.

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for whitening, and treatment outcomes can vary depending on the cause of discolouration and any existing dental restorations.

Receiving advice from a dental professional helps ensure whitening treatment is both safe and effective.
